Calm Sea

"It was beautiful not despite but because of the friction it has had to endure. It had been thrashed around, but instead of being destroyed, it was improved with every scratch and scrape, sculpted. In fact, the scuffs themselves are what gave it its quiet splendor; they are responsible for turning a simple piece of glass (which could have just as easily been trash) into a gem. It wouldn't be the same without the wear and tear..."

I Want to Age Like Beach Glass

I want to age like beach glass. Smoothed by tides, not broken. I want the currents of life to toss me around, shake me up and leave me feeling washed clean. I want my hard edges to soften as the years pass—made not weak but supple. I want to ride the waves, go with the flow, feel the impact of the surging tides rolling in and out.

When I am thrown against the shore and caught between the rocks and a hard place, I want to rest there until I can find the strength to do what is next. Not stuck—just waiting, pondering, feeling what it feels like to pause. And when I am ready, I will catch a wave and let it carry me along to the next place that I am supposed to be.

I want to be noticed on occasion by an unsuspected soul and carried along—just for the connection, just for the sake of appreciation and wonder. And with each encounter, new possibilities of collaboration are presented, and new ideas are born.

I want to age like beach glass so that when people see the old woman I will become, they will embrace all that I am. They will marvel at my exquisite nature, hold me gently in their hands and be awed by my well-earned sheen. Neither flashy nor dull, just a perfect luster. And they will wonder, if just for a second, what it is exactly I am made of and how I got to this very here and now. And we will both feel lucky to be in that perfectly right place at that profoundly right time.

I want to age like beach glass. I want to enjoy the journey and let my preciousness be, not despite the impacts of life, but because of them.

All About Therapy

Learn About My Methods

According to the American Psychological Association: "In psychotherapy, psychologists help people of all ages live happier, healthier and more productive lives. Psychologists apply research-based techniques to help people develop more effective habits. There are several approaches to psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and psychodynamic, among others, that help people work through their problems. Psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a psychologist. A psychologist provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral and nonjudgmental.,

In addition, the APA has also stated that there is a strong connection between your mind and body which as we grow older becomes more and more important. "Psychological studies show that your mind and your body are strongly linked. As your mental health declines, your physical health can worsen. And if your physical health declines, you can feel mentally "down." A positive outlook can help keep you healthy.

You can improve the quality of your everyday life by building resilience, which will help you adapt to stress and bounce back from life's most difficult times. Resilience isn't something you're born with — it's something you can learn over time. Resilient people have strong emotional well-being, healthy relationships and an optimistic outlook. Optimism and good relationships have been shown to improve health and longevity.

Pay attention to what your body is telling you about the state of your mind. If you're getting tension headaches, for example, your body may be telling you that you need help dealing with whatever's on your mind.

A psychologist can help with everyday life

A psychologist can help you meet the challenges and stress you face every day by working with you to create strategies that build resilience. Talking to a psychologist can help you deal with difficult thoughts and feelings that can affect your day-to-day functioning.

Psychological well-being and learning resilience go hand-in-hand and provide:

  • The capacity to make realistic plans to deal with stressors in your life and carry them out

  • A positive view of yourself and confidence in your strength and ability to confront life's challenges

  • Skills in communication and problem solving

  • The capacity to manage strong feelings, negative thinking and unhealthy behaviors that may arise when you’re under stress

  • Ways to avoid illness brought on by stress and anxiety."
